Choose the model by ownership—not by the label on the invoice.

“Outsourcing” can describe several materially different relationships. Compare who owns the client promise, who is visible, how work enters, and who decides exceptions.

Four common ways to add capability.

DecisionWhite-label deliveryOrdinary subcontractingStaff augmentationReferral
Client contractSelling practice retains it.Varies by statement of work.Buyer retains it.Usually moves to the referred provider.
Client-facing identityDefined to support the selling practice’s offer.Often visible as a third party.Individuals may appear as part of the buyer’s team.Provider uses its own identity.
Unit of scopeRecurring service boundary.Task, project, or deliverable.Time and assigned role.Provider’s separate service.
Exception ownerNamed between both operating teams.Governed by the subcontract.Buyer normally directs the person.Provider decides within its own contract.
Best fitRepeatable managed work behind an existing offer.Specialist or project work.Direct management capacity.Work the original practice does not want to own.

White-label does not mean “the client must never know another organization exists.”

The useful objective is a coherent client experience with clear authority. Contract, privacy, safety, or operating circumstances may require transparent disclosure. The arrangement should never ask a technician to misrepresent authority or hide information needed for safe service.

Define the identity used at intake, the situations that require the selling practice, and the language used when a request crosses scope. That is stronger than relying on a generic promise of invisibility.

Ask these before choosing a model.

  1. Do we want to keep the client contract and managed-service promise? If not, a referral may be cleaner.
  2. Is the need recurring service or a finite specialist deliverable?Projects often suit a scoped subcontract.
  3. Can we define permitted actions and return points? If not, discovery precedes delivery.
  4. Do we want to manage individual contributors directly? If yes, staff augmentation may fit better.
  5. Can both parties support the intended client identity safely?Document the answer before onboarding.

Evaluate the operating evidence, not the category name.

A partner assessment should test scope discipline, escalation, access, review, and transition planning.
